It's supercool here in ENGLAND!

Hey!

I am here in WORKINGTON visiting my family and friends. The weather is COOL and SUNNY about 18-22 degrees Celsius.

The kids have school until 22nd July. The children finish school at 3:15 in the afternoon. Carlota and Jose think it is unfair ( no es justo) that school finishes at 3:15. Also the children have no homework, only at weekends until they are ELEVEN! Carlota and Jose want to go to school in the UK!

Now we are going to see my friend Linda. She has got 2 boys: Garreth (13) and Owen (7). They have got blonde hair. The kids are going to play on the trampoline and play on the XBox. Later we are going to have pizza.

What are you going to do? PLEASE PLEASE write on the blog!

Thanks,

Pamela

It's HOT HOT HOT

Today was hot hot hot hot!! On Sunday it was HOTTER!

I am here next to my computer drinking TEA. English people LOVE tea!

I talked to some parents today, I helped a teacher prepare for an exam (oposición en inglés) and I organised the English classroom.

What did you do today?

This afternoon I am going to go to Xanadú to the bookshop with Carlota and José. We are going to buy 2 books : one for Carlota and one for José. Carlota likes Gerónimo Stilton.

I am reading a book called " El Profesor" by the Irish author Frank McCourt ( the author of "Las cenizas de Ángela". Frank McCourt is a teacher. I read in Spanish to make my Spanish better.

What books do you like?

I also want to look at clothes in the SALES (las rebajas) in 2 or 3 shops.

I would like a new dress!

Next Friday ( 8th July) we are going to see my family in England. It is nice and cool in England now :) We love to go to England.

I enjoy talking to my Mam and drinking cups of tea. I see my friends too. I like to go for walks by the lakes and the sea and I like to watch the television too. There are lots of NEW TV programmes when I go "home".

Well, no news about the Language Immersion Project for 6th graders yet.

The Comunidad de Madrid said they would let us know by the end of June/ early July: they are LATE!

See you later, alligator!

English Project Autumn 2011

Hello boys and girls,

We have no news yet. (No sabemos nada aún)
We are still waiting to get the results about the English project.
We will put the information on the blog as soon as we find out (en cuanto lo sepamos).
This is a national project, organised the Ministry of Education.

One group of 25 students ( 50% girls/ 50% boys) from one school in one autonomous community plus another group will spend one week in a different autonomous community with 5 native teachers plus 2 English teachers from each school. All the activities are designed to promote oral fluency: to practise speaking in English for the entire week. The activities take place during one week between 3rd October and the end of November 2011.

Lola ( 3ºB teacher and English specialist) and I are both excited. We hope to win a place for 25 students of 6ºA and 6ºB. It will be a difficult decision selecting the students who will go on this fantastic trip.

We will inform you as soon as we find out if we have a place.

Have a good Sunday,

Pamela

San Isidro

San Isidro is the patron saint of Madrid and the public holiday which coincides with this festival is on 15th Mat although a range of varied events take place from the Friday before 15th when the Mayor's speech begins proceedings and continue until the following Sunday when there is the cooking of an enormous Cocido Madrileño (Madrid's most traditional dish).

In the world of bullfighting San Isidro marks the start of the capital's season and is the world's largest event which attracts all the top bullfighters and bull breeders. If you're planning on a visit you should try to get tickets well in advance as every night of at the Las Ventas bullring sells out.On the day of May 15th many Madrileños dressed in traditional gear head for Plaza Mayor where there is traditional dancing and open air concerts. Casa de Campo, the large park to the south west of the centre hosts rock concerts during the fiestas and there are varied events throughout the city.

he name of the traditional Madrileño costume is a "chulapo" which comes from the word "chulo". Below are a couple of pictures of this typical dress with the men wearing a flat check cap, waistcoat and handkerchief around their necks and the women wearing elegant dresses, a head scarf and a shawl.

Around the streets of central Madrid you'll see organ grinders (barquilleros) in their San Isidro costumes selling traditional sweet snacks called "barquillos". Although San Isidro was historically a religious celebration of the generosity of San Isidro (a poor farmer) and his wife, Santa Maria de la Cabeza, in giving food to the poor, it is now a excuse for great festivities. This turnaround has been the case in most national festivals. There are lots of "fiestas" in Spain.

Carnival 2011

Next week we are going to have the carnival in school.

We are going to dress like Romans this year.

Here is a website about Roman clothes.

Here is a video about how to make a TOGA with a bed sheet.

Here are some hilarious videos (aquí hay dos vídeos muy muy gracisosos):

FUNNY INFORMATIVE VIDEOS ABOUT ROMANS

Here is a video about Roman toilets. Here is a video about Roman table manners ( sobre como se portan en la mesa de comer). Another video about gladiators. In this video there are no animals to fight the gladiators.

THE LIFE OF BRIAN : What have the Romans ever done for us ?

Click here for a very funny scene from The Life of Brian which illustrates why the Romans are important.

EXPLANATION fo this video:

1.Then men here say they plan to capture Pilate's wife ( capturar la mujer de "Pontius Pilate") then demand that the Roman empire surrender (a cambio piden que se rinde el ejército romano).
2.They say " The Romans have taken everything" ( que los romanos se han llevado todo de ellos y de sus padres y de los padres de sus padres etc.)
3. Then they say " What have the Romans ever done for us? " ( ¿Qué han hecho los romanos para nosotros? A continuación el jefe de la banda, sin ganas, relata la lista de todas las mejorías que han traído los romanos)

THE EXACT WORDS:

And what have they ever given us in return?- The aqueduct?- What?- The aqueduct.- Oh. Yeah, they did give us that. That's true, yeah.- And the sanitation.- Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city used to be like?- I'll grant you the aqueduct and sanitation, the two things the Romans have done.- And the roads.- Yeah, obviously the roads. I mean the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitaion, the aqueduct and the roads...- Irrigation.- Medicine.- Education.- Yeah, yeah, all right, fair enough.- And the wine.- That's something we'd really miss, Reg, if the Romans left. - Public baths.- And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now. - They certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it, they're the only ones who could in a place like this.- All right, but apart from sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?- Brought peace?- Oh, peace. Shut up!
